Taylor Park Reservoir & Crested Butte

This area is some of the best riding in Colorado for everything from Jeeps, ATV, Dirt bikes and more. Hundreds of square miles of back country Jeep roads, single track trails and more. There is something for everyone here, from mild to wild. The camping is great too, with so many spots to choose from it is unreal. There is an Trading Post right at the reservoir that has everything you need, from cabins, RV park, restaurant, grocery, gas, outpost store and more. I can vouch for the folks here, they are very nice and accommodative. Here is there link www.taylorparktradingpost.com  You can camp at the outpost, or one of the many forest service campgrounds around the area, or just pull into the woods. Wow I could stay here for months, however I only had time to stay for less than a week.

Open Range, Watch for Angry Cows

 

This is Taylor Pass! It will take you to Aspen if you follow it all the way there. The pass is difficult but not all that bad except for the quarter mile you have to ride up the creek in a foot of water. But we decided to try to find an easy way home instead of turning around and riding back down the way we came up. As the trail turned southeast then it really got tough. Single track on the side of a very steep mountain with steep rocky parts of the trail that was for the most part quite skinny. The when we finally started downhill it was in a single track deep rutted trough that was of course half filled with small granules of ice from a hail storm that had passed just before we did. When we finally got back to a FS road we were on the wrong side of the mountain range. We needed to cross it again to get back to camp, the nice family I was traveling with decided to take another single track back across at the end of CR-759 (Google says 75G). I was dead tired and opted to follow the main road back to camp. I ran out of gas and went on reserve just about the time I got to the main highway 135. Thank God the little resort at Almont had a pump and the man left the front desk to sell me two gallons (bless him). I finally got back to camp at 8:00 PM, almost dark and in the rain, total miles 75 .... The RV never looked so good!
